Hajj Pilgrimage

Hajj Pilgrimage

Hajj Pilgrimage 1024 678 Chris Wells

The Hajj pilgrimage flights for 2024 have recently started at MAN and we will see many Hajj pilgrims in their distinctive white Ihrams (Hajj uniform) preparing for their journey to Mecca (Saudi Arabia). The Hajj pilgrimage is an important time for Muslims, every Muslim is expected to make this pilgrimage at least once in their lives (except for medical or economic reasons) and they travel to Mecca to visit the Kaaba (“House of Allah”).

Those of us who work at the airport can help smooth the journeys for pilgrims in a number of ways. Men undertaking the Hajj are required to change into their Ihram (two seamless white cloths) before boarding a direct flight to Jeddah. This is a sign that they are in a state of holiness and it is important that this is respected – for example if a sniffer dog touches the Ihram or if anything considered impure is spilt on it then it would need to be changed (the Chaplaincy does keep a few spares for emergencies). There are currently two Ihram changing areas airside in T2, one by Boots and the other by Gate A8 and pilgrims should be directed there to change rather than in the prayer room.
