May the Lord go with you

May the Lord go with you on your journey, whether near or far; may He keep you safe in His loving care; may He guide you everywhere you go, by land, sea or air; may He bless you in every possible way, and may He be good to you until you return safely to your loved ones again. Amen.

So many people
God of creation, thank you for the various peoples and countries represented in this airport today, especially for [name].
Bless all who travel for business, pleasure, or emergency today, that they may continue to glorify your world by their lives and actions. Amen.

Waiting to travel
God of patience, be with me as I wait in the airport [because of...].
Let me spend this time with you, focusing on your presence in my life despite the stress of the present situation.
Help me breathe deeply, relax, and enjoy the present moment, so that I may be refreshed when it is time to travel again. Amen.

Boarding the plane
God of power, be with the pilot and all who operate this plane as it takes off.
Bless everyone on board, and calm anyone who is feeling anxious or afraid [especially...].
Help the passengers to put their trust in those whose job it is to get them safely and comfortably to their destination.
Give to passengers and crew your gifts of patience, calmness and sensitivity to others -
those for whom this is a new and unsettling experience and those for whom this is a regular part of their everyday life.
Hold this aeroplane [insert name of flight or type of plane] and all the precious lives it contains in your hands and keep them [us] safe - now and always. Amen.

During the flight

Prayers from the Catholic Tradition

An Air Traveller's Prayer

O Mary, Our Lady of the Skies
my heavenly Mother
I place myself under your guidance and protection
upon the journey which I am about to undertake,
and I ask that this earthly journey
upon the wings of the wind
may be brought to a safe landing.
Our Lady, Queen of Heaven, pray for us.

A Prayer to Saint Christopher, Patron Saint of Travellers

O Glorious Saint Christopher, you have inherited a beautiful name, Christbearer, through the wonderful legend that while carrying others across a raging stream, you also carried the child Jesus.

Teach us to be true Christ-bearers to those who do not know him. Protect all who travel, both near and far, and pray for us, that Jesus Christ may be with us always.

Dear Saint Christopher
protect me today
in all my travels
along the road's way.
Give your warnning sign
if danger be near
so that I may stop
until the path be clear.
Be at my window
and direct me through
when vision blurs
from out of the blue.
Carry me safely
to my destined place
as you carried Christ
in your close embrace.

A Buddhist Prayer
"Shakyamuni and Many Treasures Buddhas with the four bodhisattvas headed by Superior Practices, will lead you by the hand on your journey. The Lotus Sutra is a lantern in the dark or a boat at a crossing. At times it is water and, at times, fire. This being so, it assures us of "peace and security in our present existence and good circumstances in future existences."

Nichiren Daishonin, The Sword of Good and Evil
An Islamic Prayer
Send Thy peace, O Lord, which is perfect and everlasting, that our souls may radiate peace.
Send Thy peace, O Lord, that we may think, act, and speak harmoniously.
Send Thy peace, O Lord, that we may be contented and thankful for Thy bountiful gifts.
Send Thy peace, O Lord, that amidst our worldly strife we may enjoy thy bliss.
Send Thy peace, O Lord, that we may endure all, tolerate all in the thought of thy grace and mercy.
Send Thy peace, O Lord, that our lives may become a divine vision, and in Thy light all darkness may vanish.
Send Thy peace, O Lord, our Father and Mother, that we Thy children on earth may all unite in one family.
Sufi Prayer

God is the light of the heavens and the earth.
The smile of God's light is like a niche in which is a lamp,
the lamp in a globe of glass,
the globe of glass as if it were a shining star,
lit from a blessed olive tree
neither of the East nor of the West,
its light nearly luminous
even if fire did not touch it.
